FUSD Honored with National "Dispelling the Myth" Award

To: The teachers, students, staff and
parents of the Fontana Unified School District:
I am very pleased to report that the
Fontana Unified School District has been honored with a national award that
acknowledges your hard work – the Education Trust’s first annual “Dispelling the
Myth Award.” The award was presented at the Education Trust’s National
Conference in Washington, DC.
Fontana was one of only 8 districts,
nationwide, to be so honored. Education Secretary Rod Paige presented the
award, along with Kati Haycock, Director of the Education Trust, after
announcing that Fontana’s schools “outpaced the average state improvement in
nearly every grade level,” between 1998 and 2002, “including making two to three
times the statewide gains at the middle and high
school level.
Regarding the award winners, the Education Trust said:
Through high expectations, persistence,
and smarter ways of working, these schools and districts are helping to
dispel the devastating myth that poor and minority children cannot learn
to high academic levels.
I received a letter from Senator Barbara Boxer that helps
capture the scope of this accomplishment:
Your [F.U.S.D.’s] recognition at this conference is
testament to your district’s extraordinary progress and achievements. It is
important for all our nation’s children to receive a high quality education and
achieve the American Dream. You are making a significant contribution towards
these goals, and I thank you for your exemplary dedication and commitment. Your
district serves as a model for the state and nation.
Congratulations again to you all. Keep up the excellent
work!
Credit for this award belongs to each of you, and to the
members of Fontana’s Board of Education, who have consistently supported you as
you put Fontana’s students first.
Credit belongs to the students who did their best to
succeed, the parents who encouraged them, the teachers who devoted themselves to
being the best teachers they could be, to principals who worked with teachers to
look at student data with fresh eyes and implement new instructional strategies.
Credit also belongs to the staff who support the
instructional program by delivering training, curriculum guides, transportation,
meals, counseling, library books, clean classrooms – by removing potential
roadblocks before they can distract students and teachers from doing their work.
I look forward to working with all of you in our continued
effort to provide a quality educational program for all students. Thank you for
what you do every day to support our children.

Debra A. Bradley, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools
