Miller High School Awarded Academy Grant
A.B.
Miller High School has been awarded the California Partnership Education Academy
Grant for $81,000. The funds will provide support for the Educational Academy,
one of three schools-within-a-school programs at that site.
A model
public/private partnership such as this requires in-kind funds from the industry
partner, student internships between the junior and senior years, close
monitoring of student progress and a commitment from all stakeholders to focus
on student achievement. Students with similar interests are able to make a
strong connection with a teacher, as well as participate in industry tours and
outside training. In the current economic environment, grant funding often
provides the means by which innovative programs may be established.
In the
mega schools that are becoming all too prevalent in California, where the number
of pupils enrolled prevents all students from receiving consistent, personalized
instruction, academies provide an alternative model. In an academy, (one
structure of the Smaller Learning Communities concept) smaller classes of
approximately 30 students become “family-like” and partner with community
organizations to support and motivate At-Risk students. This enhances their
chance for graduation and success after high school. A.B. Miller High School is
to be congratulated for its efforts in seeking additional opportunities whereby
students may succeed.
