PRESS RELEASE

Canyon Crest Receives Title I Academic Achievement Award

On Thursday, April 29, 2004, during a luncheon banquet held in San Francisco, Canyon Crest Elementary in Fontana was recognized for earning the Title I Academic Achievement Award.  The award was presented by Jack O’Connell, State Superintendent of Public Education to Sharon Lovell, Principal of Canyon Crest Elementary.  Also in attendance and representing the Fontana Unified School District were Laurie St. Gean, Associate Superintendent of Educational Services, Cheryll Price, Director of Categorical Programs, Kathy Brumm, previous Principal of Canyon Crest, and Jeanne Hendricks, Teacher representative from the school.

The Title I Academic Achievement Award Program has been in operation since 1984 and was reauthorized by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB).  The program was developed so that eligible schools can be identified and recognized for demonstrating success in ensuring that all students make progress toward meeting or exceeding state content standards.  Eligible schools have significantly closed the achievement gap among the significant subgroups of students enrolled in the school and have met the adequate yearly progress requirements for at least two consecutive years.  For 2004, in the state of California there were 214 schools awarded the Title I Academic Achievement Award.  Ten of those awards went to schools in San Bernardino County.

To be eligible for the Academic Achievement Award, Canyon Crest Elementary School demonstrated an achievement level of twice the Academic Performance Index (API) growth target, school wide and for the socio-economically disadvantaged subgroup, for 2001-02 and 2002-03.  The school also made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), as calculated by the California Department of Education and defined under NCLB for 2001-02 and 2002-03.  Additionally, Canyon Crest attained a median API growth score, as required, of 729 during the 2003 school year.  Meeting this same eligibility criteria and earning the Title I Academic Achievement Award in 2003 was another Fontana school, Shadow Hills Elementary School.
