Almeria Awarded GEAR UP Grant
Almeria Middle School has been awarded a California GEAR UP
(Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate
Programs) grant of approximately $50,000 for each of the next two years.
GEAR UP is a federally funded, state-administered program designed to stimulate
interest in college attendance, awareness of college entrance requirements, and
knowledge about available financial aide by middle school students. Through
this funding, California GEAR-UP will provide services to support Almeria in
developing a college-bound culture.
GEAR UP works to develop and sustain the organizational
capacity of middle schools by supporting the adults who influence and assist
middle school students, specifically their counselors, English and mathematics
teachers, principals and families. As a result of this expanded capacity, a
higher proportion of the students will have access to and enroll in
postsecondary education.
Dr. Marlin Brown, Principal of Almeria Middle School, says
that the GEAR UP program ties in with the school’s existing AVID (Advancement
Via Individual Determination) program and other college-going program, DDD
(Dolphin Dreamers and Doers). Ms. Freda Kelly, AVID coordinator, says, “This
will be wonderful for all of our students. We are thrilled.”
