The Play's the Thing

With Fall comes a new offering of theatre productions by our budding thespians.  You won't want to miss the talent on display at Fontana's high schools.

A.B. Miller High School - "Bye Bye Birdie"

The A.B. Miller Drama Department will be presenting their production of the hit 1960's Boardway musical "Bye Bye Birdie" on December 2-4 at 7 p.m. in the A.B. Miller Theatre.  Tickets are $7 and available at the door.

Play Synopsis:  The musical kicks off when an Elvis-like rock-n-roll singer named Conrad Birdie gets drafted into the army.  Birdie's manager squeezes one last media extravaganza out of his departing meal ticket.  He arranges for the singer to go to a small town in Ohio and plant a parting kiss on the teenaged president of the local Conrad Birdie fan club.  This Hollywood-invasion turns Sweet Apple, Ohio, upside down.

Fontana High School - "The Odd Couple"

The students of S.T.A.R. Productions will present both a male and female version of Neil Simon’s hilarious “The Odd Couple” November 18-21 in the Theodore Auditorium.  The male version will be presented on November 18 & 20 (7 pm) and 19 (3 pm); and the female version will be presented on November 19 (7 pm) and 20 & 21 (2:30 pm).  General admission tickets are $7 and tickets for students and seniors are $5 and can be purchased at the door or in F105 during lunch and after school.

Play Synopsis:  This enduring comedy of dysfunctional roommates brings together Oscar and Felix/Olive and Florence in a classic tale of domestic culture shock.  Felix/Florence is neat, tidy, and neurotic, whereas Oscar/Olive is slovenly and laid back.  The two friends – one divorced and one newly separated and not quite sure why their marriages fell apart – move in together to save money and suddenly discover they’re having the same conflicts and fights they had in their marriages.

Kaiser High School - "Harvey"

The Kaiser High School Drama Department will be presenting their production of Mary Chase’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play “Harvey” on December 8 & 9 (5-8 pm) and 10 & 11 (7-10 pm) in Kaiser's Multipurpose Room.  Tickets are $5 for general admission and $3 for staff and students and may be purchased at the door.

Play Synopsis:  Elwood Dowd is a good-natured, slightly sloshed fellow whose faithful companion is a six-foot tall invisible rabbit named Harvey who chooses to show himself to Elwood and some of Elwood's acquaintances.  Once these people have seen and conversed with Harvey they are never the same.  Succumbing to societal pressure, Elwood's sister desperately tries to have her brother committed to a sanitarium because of his "delusions."  However, when she is mistakenly committed instead, it’s up to Elwood and Harvey to come to her rescue.
