Grant Elementary School Dedication
On
May 18, 2005, the Dedication Ceremony was held for Fontana Unified School
District's 27th and newest elementary school, Dorothy
Grant Elementary School.After Principal Nelson
Togerson welcomed everyone to the Dedication, FUSD Superintendent, Dr. Charles
D. Milligan, took over the duties of master of ceremonies. Dr.
Milligan introduced the many dignitaries in attendance, including Senator Nell
Soto, Raquel Garcia (representative of County Supervisor Paul Biane), County Supervisor Josie Gonzalez, Christian
Nelson (representative of Senator Robert Dutton), Deanna Gomez (representative
of Congressman Joe Baca), Rafael Trujillo (representative of Assemblyman Joe
Baca, Jr.), San Bernardino County Schools Business Director Scott Shira, FUSD
Board Members, district and county administration, as well as the school's
namesake, Ms. Dorothy Grant. PSWC Architects Jim Stinson, Steve Varner and
Roy Gutierrez, who designed the school, were also present at the
Dedication Ceremony, as was John Thomas of Tadros & Youseff, the contractors for
the project.
During the Dedication Ceremony, Ms. Dorothy Grant was
praised by the many dignitaries at the ceremony for the countless hours of work
she has given to the city of Fontana and to the Fontana Unified School District.
She was presented with certificates of appreciation, plaques for her
contribution to the community and accolades from all those in attendance.
The Grant Elementary School band and
choir performed throughout the Dedication Ceremony. The choir sang a song
about volunteerism written by vocal music teacher Steven Flynn specifically for
the occasion.
After the Dedication Ceremony, a small oak tree was
planted in the school's garden in honor of Ms. Grant. The garden,
featuring a waterfall and an array of flowers, was created by the students of Grant
Elementary School.
Grant Elementary School opened in Fall of 2004.
The school has an outstanding technology program that features a teacher
computer and student computer lab in every classroom. Teachers and
students have access to and incorporate this technology in their daily
communication and instructional activities.
The spirit of volunteerism and the obvious affection and high esteem for Ms.
Grant was felt by all that were present at the Dedication Ceremony.
