School of Language Development Dedication Held

On June 22, 2005, the Dedication Ceremony was held for Fontana Unified School District's newest alternative education facility, the School of Language Development.

After Superintendent Dr. Charles D. Milligan welcomed everyone to the Dedication, Dr. Gail Grant, Associate Superintendent of School Support, took over the duties of  master of ceremonies.  Dr. Grant introduced the many dignitaries in attendance, including Frank Stallworth (Representative of Senator Nell Soto), Joy Ellington (Representative of County Supervisor Josie Gonzales), Deanna Gomez (Representative of State Congressman Joe Baca), Rafael Trujillo (Representative of State Assemblyman Joe Baca, Jr.), Dr. Bette Harrison - San Bernardino County Schools Assistant Superintendent  (Representative of San Bernardino County Superintendent Dr. Herb Fischer), John Roberts - City of Fontana Mayor Pro Tem, FUSD Board Members, and district and county administration.

In her opening remarks, Dr. Grant told of just some of the successes that students of the School of Language Development have already achieved:  Five students have passed the California High School Exit Exam after only being in the country since September of 2004 and 27 students took the AP Spanish Exam and received college credit.

Georgina Montes Alanis, an eighth grade student at the School of Language Development, was one of the two students to speak at the Dedication Ceremony.  She said that, "The first time I came to this school, I was very afraid because I didn't speak any English but soon I felt comfortable and happy to be here.  All of the staff members were kind and caring.  They made be feel at home."  Georgina went on to say, "My classmates, the Hispanic community, and myself would like to thank you with all of our hearts and we also want to assure you that we will use all of the tools you provide for us to be the best individuals that we possibly can."

During the Dedication, Dr. Milligan and Cristina Nievas, the administrator of the School of Language Development, accepted numerous certificates of appreciation on behalf of the school and district  Among the accolades, Rafael Trujillo, representative from Assemblyman Joe Baca, Jr. commended Fontana Unified School District on its commitment to provide quality education to the students of Fontana.

Minh Nguyen, an eighth grade student at the school, closed the Dedication Ceremony with a speech about what the School of Language Development means to him and the other students at the school.  To help illustrate his point, he shared a survey he conducted by interviewing his fellow students.  Minh stated that, "There are more than 80% of the interviewees who like this program, 90% think that the program really helped them, especially more than 80% thought they have learned more English and nearly 70% feel more confident than before and after they studied in this school.  They are ready to go beyond their goals."

The School of Language Development opened its doors in fall of 2004 to 180 students in grades 8-10.  Students at the school receive intensive English language instruction and support in their primary language while simultaneously receiving core content instruction.  They receive high school credit and most instruction applies to the A-G requirements for the students returning to the comprehensive high school.
