National History Day

2005 marks the 25th anniversary of National History Day.   Over 2,300 students from 48 states, the District of Columbia, American Samoa and Department of Defense schools participated in 2005 National History Day at the University of Maryland on June 12-16.  During the competition, students presented research addressing this year's theme, "Communication in History: The Key to Understanding."  Fo
ur students from the Fontana Unified School District are national finalists for their individual and group entries.
  • Matthew Guerra from Almeria Middle School placed 6th in the Junior Individual Documentary category for his paper, "Ernie Pyle's War:  Communication in History, The Key to Understanding."  (History Day Advisor:  Sherry Hamilton).

  • Gasper Muela, Roger Portillo, and Martin Diaz from A.B. Miller High School came in 14th place in the Senior Group Exhibit category for their exhibit, "The Pony Express:  Communication Across a Divided Nation."  They were also awarded "Outstanding State Entry" for their exhibit.  (History Day Advisor:  David Mastas).

National History Day is a year-long, nonprofit education program dedicated to improving the teaching and learning of history in elementary and secondary schools through publications and education programs.  The program annually involves millions of people and makes history come alive for students across the United States.  Through the program, students develop critical thinking and research skills by creating exhibits, performances, documentaries and papers they may enter in competitions at the district, state and national levels.

A recent study by the University of Minnesota and Minnesota Historical Society reported 95 percent of students showed academic improvement on history-related assignments due to the introduction of National History Day.
