Fourth of July

All Fontana Unified School District schools and offices will be closed on Monday, July 4th in observance of the Fourth of July Holiday.

Star Spangled Spectacular:  Lights of Freedom

The City of Fontana is sponsoring a Star Spangled Spectacular:  Lights of Freedom at Fontana High School's Steeler Stadium on July 4, 2004, from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m.  $2 per person or $5 for a family of four.  There will be an interactive game zone, food and craft booths, live entertainment, and musical pyrospectacular fireworks aerial and ground show.  Click here for flyer.

Fireworks in Fontana

The City Council has adopted an Administrative Ordinance that mandates a fine of $1,000 for individuals who possess, discharge, or allow others to possess or discharge on their property, illegal fireworks, or safe and sane fireworks discharged in an illegal manner.  Click here for more information.

Fireworks:  Make your Fourth of July Happy and Safe

Fireworks, picnics, parades, and celebrations go together, especially during the Fourth of July.  Fireworks are thrilling, beautiful, and dangerous.  Fireworks accounted for approximately 9500 injuries in U.S. hospital emergency rooms in 2001.  Nearly 17 percent were eye-related.

  • Bystanders are injured more often than the people who fire off the fireworks.
  • The highest injury estimates were for firecrackers (26%), rockets (21%), and sparklers (11%).
  • Almost half (47%) of the injuries were to children under the age 15.
  • Sparklers can heat up to 1800 degrees Fahrenheit, hot enough to melt gold.

Here are some safety tips to keep your loved ones from being injured:

  • Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks.
  • Read and follow all warnings and instructions.
  • Be sure other people are out of range before lighting fireworks.
  • Only light fireworks on a smooth, flat surface away from the house, dry leaves, and flammable materials.
  • Never try to relight fireworks that have not fully functioned.
  • Keep a bucket of water nearby in case of a malfunction or fire.
  • Fireworks should be used only with extreme caution.  Older children should be closely supervised, and younger children should not be allowed to play with fireworks.
