Innovative students hope to dazzle judges and the public at
the 2006 Inland Area Science and Engineering Fair on April 18-19 at the National
Orange Show Events Center. More than 75,000 students in grades 4-12 from
Riverside, Inyo, Mono and San Bernardino counties competed for the more than 700
slots available to students.
Awards will be presented on April 19, to students in the
elementary division from 5:30-7 p.m. and to students in the junior and senior
divisions from 7:30-9 p.m. in the National Orange Show’s Renaissance Room.
The public is invited to view the exhibits April 19, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., as
well as the awards programs. About 80 winners in the junior and senior
divisions will advance to the California State Science Fair to be held in Los
Angeles in May.
Individual and group projects fall into 19 categories of
science, from microbiology to zoology, math and physics to electronics, and
consumer science to earth science. Each project is judged by a team of
representatives from education, industry and science communities, as well as
other members of the public. Criteria include research knowledge, use of
the scientific method, knowledge of the subject, writing strategies and the
creation of original data.
Thirty-one students from
Fontana Unified School District will be participating in this year’s fair, along
with students from Adelanto, Apple Valley Unified, Barstow Unified, Bear Valley
Unified, Chino Valley Unified, Colton Joint Unified, Etiwanda, Helendale,
Hesperia Unified, Lucerne Valley Unified, Morongo Unified, Redlands Unified,
Rialto Unified, San Bernardino City Unified, Snowline Joint Unified, Upland
Unified, Victor Valley Union High and Yucaipa-Calimesa Joint Unified. The
Academy for Academic Excellence in Apple Valley will also take part, as well as
a number of private schools in San Bernardino County.
The fair is sponsored by San Bernardino County and Mono County
superintendents of schools and the Riverside County and Inyo County offices of
education.
