On January 5, Grant Elementary School was honored with the presentation of a
U.S. flag from a U.S. Army troop stationed at Camp Ramadai in Iraq.
In September, the students composed more than 300 letters to send to the
troops. The flag was flown over Iraq on October 15 in the school's honor
and sent to them in appreciation for the letters they wrote to soldiers in the
unit.
Principal Chris Ridge, Mrs. Dorothy Grant (for whom the school is named) and
her friend, Mrs. Versell Washington, visited the classrooms to make the
presentation. Students were excited to see the flag, which came with a certificate verifying its authenticity and an award
that bestowed the title of "Honorary Scorpions" upon the school.
Mrs. Grant and Mrs. Washington stuffed Christmas stockings with the letters
and various goodies that were shipped to the Scorpions for the holidays. Mrs. Washington's son, First Sergeant William A. Wofford, is stationed in the
unit that received the letters. Sgt. Wofford commented that the troops
were very touched by the sincerity of the letters.
