South Tamarind gets an Extreme Makeover

On Saturday, April 21, Hands-On Inland Empire, a United Way project, sponsored a “revitalization” of South Tamarind Elementary School – and what a great event it was!

Hundreds of volunteers from 17 organizations, ranging from the Home Depot to UCR and CSUSB students, converged on South Tamarind and transformed it into a school with beautiful murals, a fresh coat of paint, a new outdoor teaching center, signs, and landscaping.

Jan Stephens of Hands-On Inland Empire coordinated the project that saw Starbucks, Dave and Busters, and El Gallo Giro providing food for the workers, and Home Depot donating not only the supplies, but the manpower to get the work done.

South Tamarind is one of the city’s oldest schools, built to accommodate 450 students and now housing over 900.  Students were thrilled to see their school looking so exciting and colorful.  Our deepest thanks to all who participated in this wonderful event!

Superintendent

Multicolored poles and stars enhance the appearance of the front of South Tamarind Elementary School.

A new sign at the driveway's entrance welcomes students, parents, and staff to the school.

A brightly hued mural commemorating Earth Day and a patchwork map of the world welcome visitors to the school's courtyard.

The United States and our neighbors to the north (Canada) and the south (Mexico).

A multicultural music-themed mural also graces the walls of the courtyard.

Stars have been painted along the exterior classroom walls.

The doors to the kindergart girls' and boys' restrooms have been painted with a treehouse theme.

The cubbies in the kindergarten classrooms have all received a fresh coat of paint.

A mural with a night sky filled with stars has been painted on the stages' backdrop in the cafeteria.

The outdoor eating area has also been given mural with a healthy food-theme.

The handball court has been given a fresh coat of paint, too.

A platformed stage and three rows of seats were created for an outdoor classroom.
