On the agenda for the May 16, 2007 Board Meeting, the Fontana Unified School District's Board of Education
has an item to adopt Resolution 07-36 recognizing the week of May 13-19, 2007, as National Police
Week, specifically to recognize the efforts of the FUSD School Police, and
recognizing Tuesday, May 15, 2006, as Peace Officers' Memorial Day.
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed Public Law 87-726
designating May 15 as Peace Officers’ Memorial Day, and the week in which May 15
falls as National Police Week. The law was amended by the Violent Crime
Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, Public Law 103-322, signed by President
Bill Clinton, directing that the flag of the United States be displayed at
half-staff on all government buildings on May 15 each year. While the
actual dates change from year to year, National Police Week is always the
calendar week, beginning on Sunday, which includes May 15.
Thus, it is appropriate for district offices and buildings, as part of the
County government, to display flags at half-staff next Tuesday, May 15, in honor
of Peace Officers' Memorial Day. Flag protocol indicates that the flag be raised
to its peak then respectfully lowered to half-staff. At the end of the
day, the flag is again to be hoisted to its peak before being lowered.
