Almeria Students Bound for Brown
Almeria Middle School
students Karen Aresti and Edith De La Cueva have been accepted to Brown
University's SPARK program, a one-week summer residential program for
7th and 8th grade students who show a passion for science.
The SPARKS program is designed for bright,
motivated seventh and eighth grade students that have excelled in the subject of
science. Each day will offer a full roster of classes, extra-curricular
activities, and trips designed to nurture students' love of science.
Karen and Edith's science teacher, Mr. Idam
Chukwu, encouraged the girls to apply for the SPARK program, which accepts only
180 students. Entrance to the program is highly competitive and students
are required to apply in a manner much like a college application - writing an
essay, submitting a letter of recommendation from a teacher, and even a copy of
their official transcript.
Once accepted, Almeria's administrators and staff
rallied around the girls to raise the $2,075 each girl would need for her
tuition and air fare. Through their efforts, a fair amount of money was
raised but not quite enough, so the 8th grade team decided to reach out to the
City of Fontana for their help.
When City Councilperson Janice
Rutherford heard about the wonderful opportunity presented to these students,
she enlisted the financial assistance of local businesses.
Both Councilperson Rutherford and Mayor Mark
Nuaimi attended Almeria's 8th Grade Awards Ceremony on June 11th, where they
presented both Karen and Edith with plaques and checks for $2,075 and congratulated them for their
hard work and dedication.
The girls will be leaving for Providence, Rhode
Island to start their courses in July. Both girls are excited to begin
this incredible experience of attending an Ivy League University while still in
middle school. Their teacher, Mr. Chukwu, hopes their experience at Brown
will follow them throughout their academic careers. "These students are
laying a clear foundation to their future and the future is going to high school
and even a place like Brown University," he said.
