A Glance at How Far We Have Come: Elementary Reform
In 2000, the Board of Education commissioned a curriculum audit which suggested a
focus on elementary instruction by moving resources toward the K-5 grade span.
The Board of Education took action to follow this recommendation and so did the
elementary staff. The opportunity for targeted staff development, data
driven instruction and focus on standards along with the support of Site
Literacy Leaders, counselors, support staff and instructional leadership has had
tremendous results.
When we started our reform efforts
we had many elementary sites in
critical need of improvement. The
lowest API was 419 and the highest
675. We had 8 schools in the 400
range. Since, we have implemented
the Reading First Grant at 16
sites, we are on our third year of
implementation of Open Court, and
we have exited four sites from
Program Improvement status, and
one from IIUSP! We have added five
Distinguished School Awards and
three Title 1 Achieving School
Awards. Our API ranges from 659 to
793 with 17 sites in the 700
range. The state target is 800!
We continue to make progress
toward meeting the needs of all
our students and the state and
federal requirements. Well Done!
