At the May 16, 2007 meeting of the Board of Education, the 2006-2007 Site Teachers of the Year were recognized for their outstanding work and dedication on behalf of the students of Fontana.  From this exceptional group of teachers, Yolanda Mendoza, Associate Superintendent of Human Resources, announced the FUSD's 2006-07 Teacher of the Year:  Lyle Tavernier, a 2nd grade teacher at Primrose Elementary School.

Mr. Tavernier became interested in becoming a teacher because of a science teacher.  He runs an after school science club that made recyclable Earth Day grocery bags for Henry's Farmers Market and he had a moon watching party for his students and their families to observe the full moon through a telescope.  In the future, he would like to apply for the NASA Educator Astronaut program.

Mr. Tavernier believes that education is something that extends beyond the classroom and is taken home and that sharing knowledge and experience is not only a fit to those who grow wiser but also a rewarding undertaking for the individual sharing his or her knowledge.
