University of Redlands Honors Kathy Binks

On March 10, 2007 the University of Redlands Town and Gown celebrated the 20th anniversary of their scholarship benefit luncheon and fashion show entitled "A Woman's Place is Every Place."   Town and Gown is a university-community support group, and they hold this luncheon annually to recognize accomplishments and contributions of Inland Empire women.  This year, FUSD Board Member Kathy Binks was among the ten women honored for their professional and personal achievements.

Mrs. Binks was honored for work in education and volunteerism.  She is an 18-year member of the FUSD school board and a founding board member of the Fontana Boys and Girls Club.

Other Honorees included Beverly Bailey, of Riverside; Wilmer Amina Carter, of Rialto; Bobbi Simenton, of Highland; and Marianne Johnson Finlay, Mary Jo Holmes, Tracy Massimiano, Sally Moore, Helen Nies and Laura Vroman, all of Redlands.

"The honorees showed a particularly strong commitment to lifelong volunteerism," said Jo Jones, the university's director of volunteer services.  "As we have looked at this group, we have really been struck by how much wonderful work is done by volunteers in our area," Jones said.  "These are all wonderful, accomplished women, who have volunteered their time in a variety of ways."

The University of Redlands Town & Gown organization was founded in 1982 as an outgrowth of the 75th Anniversary celebration.  Today, the original purpose and mission remain constant:  to promote a positive, mutually supportive relationship between the university (“gown”) and the Inland Empire area (“town”); to provide scholarships to qualified area students; to showcase the cultural and entertainment activities on campus; and to enhance the students' relationships to the Inland Empire area.
