FUSD Breaks Ground for Jurupa Hills High School

On Wednesday, May 7, 2008 the Fontana Unified School District held a Groundbreaking Ceremony for Fontana's newest high school, Jurupa Hills High School (JHHS).

Melinda Pure, Director of Facilities Planning, Design and Construction, welcomed the crowd of approximately 80 people who gathered for ceremony.  Superintendent Jane Smith and Board President Laura Abernathy Mancha expressed their enthusiasm for the building of a fifth comprehensive high school in the city of Fontana, as well as paid homage to the original Jurupa Hills.  The elementary-turned-middle school is located across the street from the future site of JHHS and will house the Fontana Adult School beginning in 2008-09.

Cali Binks, Deputy Superintendent of Instructional Services, who will take over the reins as Superintendent in July, revealed that the school colors for JHHS will be purple and gold.  She also spoke of the future construction plans to relocate of Citrus High School adjacent to the JHHS.

JHHS located between Slover and Santa Ana Avenues and Citrus and Oleander Avenues.  It has been designed to accommodate 2100 students in grades 9-12, with the potential to grow to a capacity of 3200.  The enrollment boundaries for the school have not yet been established; however, it is anticipated that the new school will serve students residing within the southeast portion of the District, and will draw some students currently attending both Kaiser and Fontana High Schools when it opens its doors in 2010.

The new school will be constructed in an all-under-one-roof concept, which will include spaces for administration, media/library, classrooms, food services, and a performing arts theater.  The design saves energy costs with natural-light filtering windows and efficient heating systems, among other architectural elements.  The 45-acre site will also have a 4000 seat football stadium.  JHHS was designed by WLC and the construction management firm is Neff Construction, Inc.
