STAR Testing:  Helping Your Children Achieve

This spring, students throughout California are participating in the Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Program, including students in the Fontana Unified School District.  The STAR tests measure student learning in English/Language Arts, Mathematics, History/Social Science, and Science.

Here are some ways that you can help your child do well on the state tests:

  • Ask your child's teacher if there are any areas where your child needs extra help.
  • Make sure your child is well rested.  Most children need 10 hours of sleep to perform their best.
  • Provide a healthy breakfast, and send a good snack for testing.
  • Make sure your child arrives at school on time.
  • Make sure your child knows it's important to take the test seriously, follow the rules, and do his or her best.
  • Ask your child each day about the testing that day.
  • Discuss test results with your child when you receive them.

Above all, keep things in perspective.  Standardized tests are just one of the many ways that schools measure children's learning.  Keep in mind that among many other things, good attendance, work completion, and passing grades are also very important for your child's success in school.
