Live Oak Hosts Fitness Challenge Awards Assembly
On
May 29, 2008 the students and staff at Live Oak Elementary School were delighted
to host the Kids Fitness Challenge Awards Assembly. Live Oak and eight
other local schools were honored for their outstanding participant level at the
recent Kids Fitness Challenge at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana.
Last month, more than 200 schools from five
counties and 5000 students attended in the Kids Fitness Challenge.
Students participated in the 5K run/walk/bike/skate event and joined in
fun-filled activities at the Get Healthy Expo. The event encouraged
students to eat healthy and be active to reduce childhood obesity. Schools
with at least 65 participants were eligible to receive a cash grant from the
Fitness Challenge Foundation.
The DJs from Radio Disney 1290 AM cranked up the
crowds' excitement level while John Wordin of Kids Fitness Challenge presented
the cash grants to the winning schools. FUSD's Live Oak and Maple
Elementary Schools and the School of Language Development were honored for their
participant levels, as well as the City of Fontana's program Fontana Smart Kids.
Schools honored from neighboring district were, Central Elementary School, Creek
View Elementary School, Mesquite Trails Elementary School, Ranch View Elementary
School, and Fremont Middle School. Representatives from all the schools
were on-hand to accept their prize money of $830.
Fontana Smart Kids had the largest participation
of close to 500 and received the grand prize of Fitness Spin Bikes. Live
Oak was also honored with additional prizes for their attendance: four
"Dance, Dance Revolution" games and thirty swing ball sets.
Principal Ricardo Chaparro said proudly, "I was
personally very pleased with both the event and the assembly. The money
given to the school will certainly benefit our school and the games will be put
to use. The most important thing out of this event is that families
participated in a fun event together, the school had many in attendance and
fitness, exercise, and healthy habits are promoted not only to students but to
families."
"It is also extremely good for the school community to have an assembly of this
magnitude with representatives from the County Supervisors, the Department of
Public Health, the Speedway, other schools, the Superintendent, a Board Member
and the Mayor of Fontana," he continued. "I am very proud of this
community!"
