44th Annual Charles Pine Math Field Day

Elementary and middle school students in the Fontana Unified School District will demonstrate their mathematical skills as a part of the District’s 44th Annual Math Field Day competition on Saturday, May 31, 2008 at A.B. Miller High School.  The competition begins at 8 a.m., with the Awards Ceremony taking place at 11:30 a.m.

Teams of 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade students are involved in several different types of math knowledge testing and strategy games.  The topics include terminology, problem solving, calculator skill use, mental mathematics, basic skills arithmetic, algebra and geometry.  Five mathematically based strategy games are played in a tournament-like competition.  Students will be awarded medals for first through fifth places.  In addition, based on individual student performance, schools compete for overall awards.

Who is Charles Pine?

FUSD's Math Field Day competition is named after the late Charles Pine.  Mr. Pine taught math at Fontana High School for over 22 years and was the leading force behind Math Field Day.
