FUSD Staff Honored at County Multilingual Recognition Program

Each year, The San Bernardino County Office Recognizes individuals from each district who have gone above and beyond in their work with English Learners.  Last Friday, April 25, 2008, three of our own in Fontana were acknowledged for their dedication, innovation and showing great results in the academic and language achievement of EL students.

Maple Elementary School Principal Mark McLaughlin's focus on student achievement through data analysis, maintaining fidelity to the core, and creating effective intervention programs raised students test scores dramatically.  Mark's high expectations of students and staff were never compromised and he was able to create a positive culture at his school that allowed for academic achievement to flourish, removing them from the Program Improvement Cycle.

Carol Garibay is a Teacher at Date and Maple Elementary Schools.  Her work with teachers and EL students has made a positive impact on student achievement.  Carol was also notable last year with the students at North Tamarind.  Carol was part of the North Tamarind team last year where her work made a notable impression on the academic growth of EL students.  North Tamarind exited from Program Improvement last year.

Cristina Nievas is Coordinator of the School of Language Development.  The students at her school are at the beginning stages of English Language Development and have been in the country for less than one year.  Cristina and her staff work to simultaneously teach the English Language while continuing preparation in the student's grade level content area.  Working with 8th through 12th grade students, she provides intensive instruction to allow students the opportunity to transition as quickly as possible into the comprehensive high schools.  Cristina also had the honor of accepting the Golden Bell Award given by the California School Boards Association this year.

Congratulations to our three Awards Recipients!
