It's a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood at Citrus Elementary

On Thursday, March 20, Citrus Elementary School celebrated the 80th birthday of beloved children's television icon Fred Rogers with their first annual "Won't You be my Neighbor Day."

Students wrote letters inviting district administrators to come to their school and read a story to them about being a good neighbor.  Superintendent Jane Smith, Assistant Superintendent Dr. Linda Del Giudice, and many others were more than happy to comply and throughout the day visited classrooms to read to the students.

The students in Miss Altman's class sang the theme song, "Won't You be my Neighbor" to greet guest reader Darcy Whitney, Coordinator of Instructional Technology, upon her arrival to their classroom.  After she read her children's favorite book, "Diary of a Spider," the class gave her packets of wildflower seeds - one for her and the others for her to give to her own neighbors!

The students and staff at Citrus Elementary also collected new and used sweaters to donate to the needy.  The sweaters will go to Shoes That Fit and other local charities.

Mr. Rogers was the host of the children's television show "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" from 1968 through 2001 which has the distinction of being the longest running program on PBS (it ran for 998 episodes).  Throughout his life, he was an advocate for the education and welfare of children.  In 2002, Mr. Rogers received the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his contributions to children's education.  He died on February 27, 2003.
