What do March 14 and pie have in common?
Seemingly not much, at first glance. However, every year math lovers
celebrate March 14 as Pi Day - so called because the digits in the date (3.14)
correspond with the first three digits of the mathematical constant
(pi). Sometimes it is celebrated on March 14 at 1:59 p.m., commonly
known as Pi Minute.
The students at Citrus High School observed Pi
Day with the traditional
holiday fare of - what else - pie! They celebrated with pi music (some
written by students), pi art, a pi facts video made by one of the math teachers
and featuring staff and students, pi face painting and campus-wide decorating
with posters, chalk and window paint.
At last year's Pi Day celebration at Citrus, Math
teacher Melissa Ulibarri had a memorization contest and the winner memorized 150
digits of pi, with second place memorizing 100!
Mrs. Ulibarri said that it was very rewarding to
see such excitement about a math concept and that both the students and staff
had a great time.
