At the April 16, 2008 meeting of the Board of Education, the 2007-08 Site Teachers of the Year were recognized for their outstanding work and dedication on behalf of the students of Fontana.  From this exceptional group of teachers, Yolanda Mendoza, Associate Superintendent of Human Resources, announced the FUSD's 2007-08 Teacher of the Year:  Teri Martinez from Sierra Lakes Elementary School.

Having entered the teaching profession seven years ago, Teri is a fifth grade teacher and has been teaching at Sierra Lakes for the past six years.  Before becoming a teacher, she worked in the computer industry, working extensively with Latin American clientele.  Her previous experience has allowed her to successfully implement the use of technology in the classroom to facilitate student learning.  She also feels that being bilingual has made her sensitive and respectful to other cultures and languages, which is important when teaching in a multicultural classroom.

Teri says she is proud to be working at Sierra Lakes which was recognized this year for being the first FUSD school to exceed the State's API target, by obtaining a score of 829.  She enjoys working with young children and says that teaching them has become her passion.  Teri's goal is to continue to enrich the lives of her students and make a difference in their lives by preparing them for the future.
