Tomatoes have not been served in
any Fontana Unified School District school since Monday, June 9, 2008. The
ban will remain in effect until it is certain that the products being served are
safe for FUSD students and staff.
One June 9, the U.S. Department of Agriculture notified the California
Department of Education Food Distribution Program that an outbreak of salmonella
poisoning is being traced to raw tomatoes.
Like many restaurants and food service programs throughout the nation, FUSD
voluntarily withdraw tomatoes from its menus after federal recommendations that
consumers avoid red plum, red Roma or round red tomatoes unless they were grown
in certain states and countries. While we have not reason to believe the
products we have received pose a risk, until we receive more definite
information, all raw tomato products have been suspended as a precautionary
measure.
The ban will remain in effect until notification is received from the California
Department of Education that produces supplied to FUSD are safe.
