Summit's Ed Kearby Named Athletic Director of the Year

Ed KearbyCongratulations to Summit High School Athletic Director Carlton "Ed" Kearby, who has been named California State Athletic Directors' Association's 2008-09 Southern Section Athletic Director of the Year.

Mr. Kearby said he felt both surprised and humbled by this honor.  "The job that I do is for the students as they are the most important aspect of our society.  Often we get lost in our own little worlds and are oblivious of the things around us, so I was a little taken a back when I was nominated. I am very honored to be nominated and selected by my peers.  To be honored by our peers is very humbling and at the same time gives a sense of satisfaction that the job I am doing is appreciated by others," said Mr. Kearby.

It's been a series of "firsts" in the Fontana Unified School District for Mr. Kearby.  He became the first Athletic Director at Kaiser High School when it opened ten years ago and moved to Summit High School when the school opened three years ago.  Said Mr. Kearby, "There are different challenges in opening a new school."  But obvious by the success of Summit's fledgling teams, Mr. Kearby has more than met those challenges.

The Summit Girls' Basketball team won their third straight Sunkist League Title this year and they've had combined league record of 30-0 over the past three years. They were ranked #2 in the 2A CIFSS all year and lost in the semi-finals of the CIF Southern Section playoffs.  Meghin Williams and Arielle George were the Sunkist League co-MVPs.  The Summit Boys' Basketball team won their first Sunkist League Title.  They ended up the eighth seed in the Boys 2A CIFSS playoffs and eventually lost in the second round of the playoffs.  Brandon Clemons was the Sunkist League MVP.  And, the Summit Girls' Soccer Team won their first Sunkist League Title and eventually lost in the second round of the playoffs.  Jennafer Soza was the Sunkist League MVP.

Summit High School Principal Mike Andrus is understandably proud of the honor being bestowed upon his school's Athletic Director.  Said Mr. Andrus, "The athletic success at Summit High School has far exceeded even the most optimistic expectations.  This is due, in large part, to our outstanding Athletic Director, Ed Kearby.  Mr. Kearby deserves each and every award that could possibly be bestowed upon an Athletic Director.  With his years of vast and varied sports experience, Mr. Kearby has amassed an absolutely incredible amount of knowledge regarding rules and regulations, leaguing, equipment procurement, diplomacy as well as hiring and retaining the right staff.  His tenacity and attention to detail have assured that our students have everything they need in order to compete successfully.  In my estimation, Ed Kearby is the Athletic Director of the decade!"

Mr. Kearby will be honored at the Annual CSADA Awards Banquet, along with the other Section Athletic Directors of the Year, on April 25, 2009.
