Mango Celebrates "Read Into College" with Schoolwide Suessnic
Last
week, Mango Elementary School celebrated "Read Across America" in their own
unique way with a "Read Into College" theme and a special
schoolwide Dr. Suess-inspired picnic.
Mango's event took its inspiration from "No Excuses University," a network of schools
across the United States that actively promote a comprehensive model of
college readiness to all students the moment they begin school.
Principal Sara Najarro said that Mango is in the very early steps of
applying to be a "No Excuses University" campus. "It is so exciting,"
said Mrs. Najarro. "The whole focus is preparing students for college."
With dark skies threatening the possibility of rain, the school moved their Suessnic
from the playground to the shelter of Mango's multipurpose room, library,
and lobby. Classrooms of students filled every nook and cranny, while
teachers read to
groups or students read quietly to themselves. Many of the classes
made special red and white striped construction paper hats for the occasion. And what Suessnic would
be complete without a visit from "The Cat in the Cat" himself - or
in this case, herself? The Cat is actually Chelsea Rhodes, Mango's
After School Care Coordinator from the City of Fontana and a former Mango
student!
Regal Watson,
author of the children's book "The Ant That Can't," was invited as a special
guest reader. He shared excerpts of his book about Tincy, a young ant
who is lacking self-confidence and believes he "can't" until one day, he is
receives the encouraging words from his father, "I bet you can!" Mr. Watson
led students in a special "Ant Dance" complete with sparkling
antennae bobbing around on their heads.
Even the threat of rain couldn't dampen the spirit of these enthusiastic
young readers!
