As one school year draws to an end, another begins! The new school
year brings with it many changes.
Early Start for High Schools
All high schools in the Fontana Unified School District will
begin school in August. A.B. Miller, Fontana, Kaiser, Summit, Birch and
Citrus High Schools will all start on August 11, 2008 and end on June 1,
2009. By starting the school year earlier than in previous years, our students
will enjoy the following benefits:
- Students will be off for a full week at Thanksgiving
(November 24-28, 2008).
- Winter Break will be three weeks long (December 22, 2008
through January 9, 2009).
- There will be more instructional days before State and AP
testing.
- First semester ends the day Winter Break begins.
District Closes Jurupa Hills Middle School
Jurupa Hills Middle School closed its doors at the end of the
2007-08 school year. The school has served our students in multiple
capacities throughout the years: it originated as an elementary school
when it was built in 1958 and seven years ago, it was transformed into a sixth-grade
only campus. The District is currently working on plans to renovate the
facility into the new home of Fontana Adult School. The main work will
include converting from septic tanks to sewer lines, enlarging and improving the
parking lot and expanding the administration building. Adult School
classes could begin on the campus as early as Spring semester which begins in
January 2009.
Six Elementary Schools Expand to Take on Grade 6
With the closing of Jurupa Hills Middle Schools and the
addition of two new elementary schools last year, six of our elementary schools
will now include sixth grade on their campuses. Beginning in 2008-09, Beech Avenue, Binks,
Citrus, Live Oak, Poplar, and West Randall will be K-6 elementary schools.
Track Changes at Four Elementary Schools
Effective the 2008-09 school year, Juniper, Oak Park, Shadow
Hills, and South Tamarind Elementary Schools will change from their current
Multi-Track, Year-Round schedule to the Single-Track, Year-Round schedule.
These changes were made to improve the coordination between elementary school
schedules and to increase the number of sites that operate on the same school
year calendar.
It is our hope that of these changes will contribute to our
district functioning more efficiently and to better serve our students.
