One of the most common questions
asked of children is, "What do you want to be when you grow-up?" On March 4, 2009, the
students at Oleander Elementary School had the opportunity to find out more
about some of the professions to which they can aspire when they grow-up at the school's 2nd Annual
Career Day.
Twenty-five professionals from a wide variety of fields visited classrooms
and gave presentations on their respective careers. Students in
kindergarten through fifth grade listened to presentations by FUSD
Superintendent Cali Olsen-Binks; Dr. Lori Johnstone, a
veterinarian; Humberto Gomez, a biochemist;
Patrick Lauderdale, a personal trainer at UC Riverside; Judge Michael Gassner;
Police Officer Justin Moyer and his K9 partner, Officer Jarus; Fontana High
School Assistant Principal Martin Gomez; Kevin Beecher, a pilot; and Kevin Norris,
an emergency room nurse, to name just a few. The speakers shared information
about their professions, as well as stressing the importance of education and how
they have applied what
they learned in school to what they do on the job everyday.
Assistant Principal Eduardo Gomez was very enthusiastic about the students'
response to
this year's Career Fair. Said Mr. Gomez, "It was a huge success.
This is something we do to help motivate and expose our students to successful
individuals that they can relate to."
