Citrus Students Celebrate with a Slice of

So,
what do March 14th and pie have in common?
Seemingly not much, at first glance. However, according to Kelly Allen, Mathematics
Coordinator for Secondary Instruction, "Pi is an irrational number with an
infinite number of digits to the right of the decimal point. The digits
extend to infinity with no repetition and no pattern. Pi is the ratio of the circumference of any circle
to its diameter. 3.14 is an approximation of Pi that is commonly used in
calculations, so we like to celebrate this special number every year on 3/14."
And what better way to celebrate Pi, than with a slice of pie?
This year, the 14th of March fell on a Saturday but
that didn't stop the students at Citrus High School from celebrating all things
Pi. Naturally there was pie, but the festivities didn't stop there.
The students enjoyed Pi music (some
written by students), Pi art, a Pi facts video made by one of the math teachers
and featuring staff and students, Pi face painting and campus-wide decorating
with posters, chalk and window paint. One inventive
student even shaved
, the
symbol for Pi, onto
his head!
Math Teacher Melissa Uilbarri was the force behind Citrus High's annual Pi Day
celebration. Mrs. Ulibarri said that it was very rewarding to
see such excitement about a math concept and that both the students and staff
had a great time.
