The API celebrations continue throughout the Fontana Unified School District, as Almond Elementary School celebrated their own 40 point increase in a unique way.  Last Friday, Almond students and staff gathered on the blacktop to build a chain of 762 paper links - plus an additional 40 links to represent the "golden links" they'll need to push them over the 800 mark they're aiming for this year.

As Almond's Principal, Dr. Karolee Rosen, explained, "With our 40 point increase for 2009, our API is 762.  Our classes created links for our API chain - about 58 chains per third through sixth grade class.  We had six students with perfect scores on the CST math who served as our accountants - they added each class's contribution to the whole and kept a running total until we reached 762.  Then our second grade students added 10 links per class for a total of 40 additional links."

The completed chain snaked around the three sides of the basketball courts.  It took several sixth graders to carry the finished chain back to the office where parents helped Dr. Rosen hang it for display.  She said, "we were very surprised that it completely encircled the office and hallway of our administration building."
