At a time when every dollar counts, the Fontana Unified School District
received a "really big check" from the Fontana Chamber of Commerce.
At the March 17, 2009 Board of Education Meeting, Suzie Colón and David Pulido
presented the district with $10,062.53 in mini-grants for teachers as part of
the Chamber's Best BET (Business and Education Together) Program.
"Through our partnership with other businesses in the city, this year we will
be able to grant $1,062.53 to teachers," said Ms. Colon. "The number of
applications this year was 52 and the amount of students impacted is 3,500.
In the past five years, a total of $126,875 has been granted to teachers and
students. These teachers go out of their way on some of these programs -
above and beyond regular duty; which is an amazing thing."
Superintendent Cali Olsen-Binks agreed, "The Best BET Program has been a
blessing to the district. The Chamber of Commerce has worked tirelessly
year after year to help provide our teachers who submit grants with funding for
projects that we don't have funding for. Sometimes it's in the area of
science and mathematics and sometimes it's a school garden. But it always
proves to be one of those wonderful extra things that, especially now in tight
fiscal times, we aren't otherwise able to support financially."
