Fontana Association for Bilingual Educators Hosts Annual Recognition Dinner


The Fontana Association for Bilingual Educators (FABE) held its Annual Recognition Dinner on Saturday, June 20, 2009 at the new Garden Hilton Inn in Fontana.  FUSD Board Member, BarBara Chavez was the keynote speaker at the event.  FABE recognized school administrators, paraprofessionals, and community members for their service and dedication to the students and parents in the Fontana Unified School District.  Congratulations to all those receiving awards:

  • Cristina Nievas, Coordinator of School of Language Development - Administrator of the Year
  • Angel Gonzalez, Teacher at A.B. Miller High School - Teacher of the Year
  • Lucille Lucero, Bilingual Aide at Locust Elementary School - Paraprofessional of the Year
  • Luis Vaquera, Mango Elementary School - Parent/Community Leader of the Year
  • Blanca McGuthrie, Enrollment Clerk at the District Enrollment Center - Cesar Chavez Lifetime Service Award

Nominees for Administrator of the Year included Cali Olsen-Binks, Superintendent; Ken Decroo, Principal of Citrus High School; Terry Abernathy, Principal of Tokay Elementary School; Antonio Viramontes, Principal of Oak Park Elementary School; Gorge Santiago, Principal of Oleander Elementary School; and Christina Nieves, Coordinator of District Language Development School.

Nominees for Teacher of the Year were Jean Diaz of A.B. Miller High School, Julie Bello of Early Education, Elena Moreno of Early Education, Lourdes Askari of Poplar Elementary School, Marla Burciaga of Citrus High School, Christina Magana-Frasquille of Tokay Elementary School, Margarita Varona of Primrose Elementary School, and Angel Gonzalez of A.B. Miller High School

Nominees for Paraprofessional of the Year included Rosalia Sendis, Bilingual Aide of A.B. Miller High School; Claudia Arellano, Instructional Technology Specialist III at Oleander Elementary School; Vernoica Cerda, School Community Liaison of Citrus High School; Christina Rizk, Librarian at Tokay Elementary School; Lucille Lucero, Bilingual Aide at Locust Elementary School; Eustacia (Stacy) Moreno, Secretary at Mango Elementary School; and Brenda Meek, Bilingual Aide of the School of Language Development.

Nominees for Parent/Community Leader of the Year included Stella Titus of Oleander Elementary School, Alma Loza of A.B. Miller High School, Jose Davila of Early Education, Luis Vaquera of Mango Elementary School, Eduardo Valencia of Oleander Elementary School, and Maria Carmen Rendon of the School of Language Development.

FABE is the Fontana chapter of the California Association for Bilingual Education (CABE).  CABE is a non-profit organization which promotes bilingual education and quality educational experience for all students in California.  CABE has over 7000 members with over 60 chapters, all working to promote equity and students for students with diverse cultural, racial, and linguistic backgrounds.  The Fontana chapter was organized in 1990 and has over 200 members.  FABE is one of the most active CABE chapters in the state.
