At
the FUSD Board of Education meeting on September 2, 2009, Superintendent Cali
Olsen-Binks announced that Tracy Hofmann, FUSD's 2008-09 Teacher of the Year, has been selected as
one of the San Bernardino County Teachers of the Year. Mrs. Olsen-Binks,
along with Pat Mazzuli - President of Fontana Teachers Association and Cynthia
Baca - California Teachers Uniserve Representative, presented Ms. Hofmann with a
bouquet of flowers to congratulate her on this outstanding achievement.
"This is very exciting for Fontana and has only
happened for us once before," said Mrs. Olsen-Binks. "Tracy is an
excellent representative for our District. We are very proud."
San Bernardino County Schools is able to nominate
one applicant for every 5,000 teachers in the county, which means they were able
to nominate three teachers. The three teachers were nominated by their
individual districts and then reviewed by a panel of county administrators who
made the final selection. Representing more than 19,000 teachers in San
Bernardino County, Ms. Hofmann, along with Valesca Lopez of Yucaipa-Calimesa
Joint Unified School District and Angie Bubb of Victor Elementary School District, will go on to
compete for the 2010 California Teacher of the Year.
Ms. Hofmann told the Board that she was shocked and humbled by the news.
"I am grateful and honored to have
been chosen by the San Bernardino Superintendent of Schools to represent
Primrose Elementary and Fontana School District at the state level for Teacher
of the Year," she said. "Although I was shocked it is definitely the
highlight of my teaching career. I owe a huge amount of thanks to my
family, friends, and coworkers for helping me to achieve this goal."
Currently in her twelfth year with the Fontana
Unified School District, Ms. Hofman is a fifth grade teacher at Virginia
Primrose Elementary School. Her Principal, Darlene Duquette, shares in Ms.
Hofmann's excitement and is proud to have one of Primrose's teachers represent
the district. "Tracy is outgoing, student-focused and very
bubbly when she's teaching," she enthused. "She brings concepts to life and gets children
excited about learning. Ms. Hofmann is a leader within her grade level and
her school site. She is knowledgeable about the essential standards, for
instance when the district Math Pacing Guides came out, she took a lead in
revising the Pacing Guide to be aligned to the report card and the essential
standards for math. She is presently on the math leadership team at the
district level and led her school's science fair and math competitions.
Ms. Hofmann takes time to listen to parents so that their children can be
successful in the classroom. Last year, the California State Standards
Test results for her class were: Language Arts - 78% were proficient and
advanced; Math - 82% were proficient and advanced; and Science - 79% were
proficient and advanced.
