After 50 years of
sharing Fontana High School's campus, Fontana Adult School
finally has a new home of its very own - sort of. Actually, now it also has
a brand new name: Fontana ROP and Adult Education Center. Although even
this new name doesn't reflect all
that this center has to offer.
Adult Education offers a large variety of courses. There are high
school diploma classes for high school students who are deficient in credits and
need to make-up credits in order to graduate with a high school diploma.
High school students can take CAHSEE prep to prepare them for passing the
California High School Exit Exam, a requirement for graduating from high school.
GED prep and test are available through Adult Education. English as a
Second Language (ESL) courses are available for students of all ages.
Stimulus-funded Career Tech courses, such as Medical Front and Back Office and
CNA, are also offered on the campus during day and evening hours.
In addition to housing the District's Regional Occupations Program (ROP) and
Adult Education, the new site is also home to the Fontana Community Day
School, which serves FUSD's expelled students until they can be reinstated back
into school.
The administration of Adult Educational has also undergone a change recently,
after the retirement of Principal Patrick Meagher, and Assistant Principal
Carolyn Baxter, Tracie Zerpoli, FUSD's
Director of Career Technical Education, was placed in charge of the program.
Assisting Ms. Zerpoli are Therese Kennedy, Coordinator of ROP, and a new
Coordinator of Adult Education who will be hired shortly to help supervise night
school. Dr. Linda Del Giudice, Assistant Superintendent of School and
Student Support, supervises the Fontana Community Day School.
"Students come because they want to improve their lives," said Tracie Zerpoli.
"They come here to get their GED or to take courses that will help them to find
jobs or enrich their future."
The new site truly was a long time coming. Fontana High School opened in
1952 and five years later, Fontana Adult School started sharing Fohi's campus to
offer classes to the community. Long in need of its own campus, the answer
to this 50 year old problem was found when a site which once served as Jurupa
Hills Elementary School and most recently Jurupa Hills Middle School, became
available. Modification were made to the buildings and grounds in order to
accommodate its new purpose and the brand new
Fontana ROP and Adult Education Center opened for business on
Wednesday, September 9, 2009.
