Fontana Schools Make Strong Academic Gains on State Tests

Dear Fontana Community,

I am pleased to share with you that according to the California Department of Education, the schools in the Fontana Unified School District continue to demonstrate solid academic gains on State tests.  We have much to celebrate!

The Academic Performance Index (API) released this week shows that our overall Districtwide API rose 18 points, from 694 to 712. Individually, more Fontana schools are closer to achieving an API of 800, the State’s goal for all schools.  All Fontana elementary schools scored at least 700 and eight Fontana elementary schools - our "Great Eight" - scored 800 or above on the API: Sierra Lakes (851), Mango (815), Grant (811), Oleander (808), Shadow Hills (808), Hemlock (807), Primrose (807), and Canyon Crest (804) Elementary School.

Twenty-seven Fontana schools met or exceeded their Schoolwide API Growth Target! Of those, the API of twenty-two schools went up by 21 points or more:  Alder (+80), Binks (+78), Oleander (+77), Primrose (+51), Beech Avenue (+49), Mango (+47), Oak Park (+42) , Almond (+40), Juniper (+39), Hemlock (+35), Sierra Lakes (+34), West Randall (+33), Locust (+32), Shadow Hills (+30), South Tamarind (+28), Canyon Crest (+28), Fontana Middle (+26), Cypress (+25), North Tamarind (+24), Fontana High (+24), Grant (+21), and Poplar (+21).

API are also calculated for subgroups—ethnic minorities, economically disadvantaged, English learners and students with disabilities.  All subgroups in the District made significant gains.  While still lagging behind, our special education subgroup showed a significant increase of 22 points.

Seeing this type of growth confirms that what we set out to do is truly working to improve student performance across the entire district.  Thank you to our motivated students, dedicated educators and support staff, and supportive parents and community for their ongoing efforts which result in outstanding API scores.  Together we will continue our efforts to close the achievement gap so that all students realize their fullest potential.

Best wishes,

Cali Olsen-Binks
Superintendent
