I was searching your website and am having a hard time
locating information on your special education services. I have searched
many other school district websites and have found special education
services information on the home page and find this information
reassuring for the residents whom live in that particular school
district. I find it very frustrating and upsetting special education
information is not easily accessible on the Fontana Unified School
District
website. Is special education not highly valued in Fontana School
District? I don’t know if maybe I am not looking in the correct sections
but not being able to find it easily is concerning. Is there a
separate
website for the Special Education Department?
|
|
A |
Yes, we definitely do value special education. Unfortunately, there is only so much room on our front page, so we've
done our best to provide links to our Special Education info in a number
of place. There is a link on the front page to "Parents" (upper
right-hand corner), on our "Parents" page we have provide as many links
as we could think of that would be of interest to our parents, including
a link to "Special Education" under the "Help Your Student" column. We
strive to make our webpage as user friendly for the community, so we
thank you for your input.

How come A.B. Miller High
School seniors cannot go out for lunch
like old times? Its disappointing for both teachers and students. Can we,
as students and teachers, change this in anyway or can the district do
anything to get us out of this?
|
|
A |
Four main reasons: 1)
We have cut our CSO's in almost half from last year so we have closed
student parking and the corresponding gate which required a CSO to be
stationed there. Closing the second entrance during the school day
helped create a more secure campus and better utilized available
personnel. 2) We were setting ourselves up for liability by
allowing kids off campus for lunch and then to return. 3) Kids were
sneaking out in trunks of cars setting up an unsafe condition. 4) Other
schools in the district do not allow students off site.

Why can't my school (A.B. Miller High
School) find the funds for
the 2011 graduation at some place and are we really going to have it
on the football field? How do they expect so many guests to fit?
Is
there any way that we could have it at the San Manuel Amphitheater or
can we as students and teachers do any thing to have a great graduation?
|
|
A |
Right now we are looking into the cost of the outside
venue and what it will cost to make provisions to the field at Miller
and the other sites. It is nice to have the ability to have
graduation ceremonies in a
nice venue that does not take a lot of preparation and can seat
everyone. The unfortunate part is if there are added costs for going to
a venue with the bad budget it may not be possible.

In one of our school meetings we were told that we were going to be getting an irrigation system installed for Poplar Elementary. Any idea on the timeline?
|
|
A |
This project is now a top priority
of FUSD's Maintenance and Operations Department as they recently finished Palmetto
Elementary and are working on Sequoia Middle School. This work will take several months to complete
as they are installing a new timer (old one is 12 years old), repair lateral lines, repair sprinkler heads, redesign center of the fields sprinklers, and then Hydro seed the field.

| Q |
What grades will Jurupa Hills High School have when it opens?
What school would I go to if I live in the Jurupa Hills attendance area
but the school doesn't yet offer my grade?
|
|
A |
When Jurupa Hills High School opens in 2010, it will have 9th and 10th grades. The following year
(2011-12), it will have 9th, 10th, and 11th. It's third year (2012-13),
Jurupa Hills will have grades 9-12, and the school will hold its first graduation ceremony.
To find out what school you would go to in 2010-11, you can either input
your address into the
School Locator or download a copy of the
2010-11 High School Boundary Map.

Why does FUSD not install solar panels on its new or
existing rooftops? The cost of energy is only going to increase, why not
take advantage of financial incentives the State of California is
offering now and invest in clean power generation and energy self
sufficiency in the future?
|
|
A |
Our District has looked at the installation of solar
systems, not only on the roofs of new schools, but also configured in a
"solar farm" providing electricity to multiple school sites. Two of the
several cost factors that the District looks at in planning new
facilities are "first costs" and "life cycle costs." "First costs" are
those costs associated with installation of a system, i.e., solar power,
and these costs are calculated so that the District knows how long a
system will have to be used to get a full return on the initial cost of
installation. "Life cycle costs" are the costs associated with a system,
i.e., solar, that the "first cost is low and then the number of years of
service for a system is factored to determine the "life cycle cost." The
District has looked at both costs for solar and neither cost produces
any real savings to the District. The overall past experiences with
solar in the public schools has also not proven to be cost effective
because of the large amount of vandalism done to the solar panels.
There are a number of incentives available for solar energy installation
with most all of them based on what is called "performance contracts,"
whereby a vendor installs the solar systems, the district issues some
kind of bonds to purchase and install the solar system and pays for the
bonds over 5 or more years. The yearly savings generated by the solar
system is used to paid the yearly bond payment. Should the solar system
not produce the savings the vendor who sold the system to the District
said it would, the vendor pays the District the difference in the actual
savings and the calculated savings. With this payment process the
district does not really realize and yearly savings in electrical costs
and if the payment for the bonds is spread out for to long a period the
initial solar system could need to be replaced before and by the end of
the bond payment period.

When is the new high school on Citrus and Slover
opening? What are the requirements for attending this school?
Word has it that it will be a "Tech School."
|
|
A |
Fontana Unified School District's fifth comprehensive high school, Jurupa Hills High School, will open in August 2010!
According to Principal Victor Uribe:
"One of the main focus
points of Jurupa Hills High School will be the use of technology. Some
of the classes that may (pending enrollment and teacher availability) be
offered are Video Production, TV News/Studio, Web Design, Graphic
Design, Digital Media, Video Editing, Computer Repair, Computer Security
and Forensics, Computer Gaming, Business Technology, Virtual Enterprise
and Entrepreneurship. Also, teacher instruction and presentations in
most classrooms will include the use of advanced technology as a
teaching tool, such as the use of SMARTBoards, Teacher Electronic
Slates, SMART Response Systems, Document Cameras, Classroom sets of
Wireless Computers, and Teacher Interactive Websites to name a few.
In regards to who will be attending JHHS, the school district and the
Board of Education, after completing a rigorous and time consuming process, have
finalized the changes in the boundaries. Those students that fall into
the new boundaries will be attending Jurupa Hills High School. (Click
here to the 2010-11 High School Boundary Map).
I welcome all new SPARTANS, where we believe in achieving - Attitude,
Excellence and Integrity."

| Q |
Why are the Fontana Elementary & Middle schools Year
Round?
|
|
A |
Although we have only two
schools left on Multi-Track, we have continued to use the "Year Round"
calendar rather than the traditional "summer off" calendar due to the
feedback we have received from our calendar committees which consist of
staff and parents.
