National School Bus Safety Week
During the week of
October 19-23, 2009, the Fontana Unified
School District will join school districts across the country as they celebrate
National School Bus Safety Week.
This year's theme, Avoid Harm Obey the Stop Arm,
emphasizes the importance for drivers to follow the rules of the road and stop
when the red lights flash, the stop sign deploys, and children are getting on
and off the bus. The stop arm requires drivers in all states to stop.
"School buses are the safest mode of transportation to and from school,
according to the National Academy of Sciences and U.S. Department of
Transportation, and parents trust the school bus to transport more than 26
million school children in 480,000 school buses each day. In our district
alone, approximately 8,000 students ride the school bus," said Mary Stevens, FUSD's Director of
Transportation. "Our job is to ensure that they get to school safe and
sound on each and every ride which is why we think it is so important to
celebrate School Bus Safety Week."
Studies have proven that the most dangerous part of the school
bus ride for children is when they get on and off the bus. Remember to
pay close attention to school buses when you see them driving on the street and
remind your children how to be safe when boarding and exiting the bus.
School Bus Safety Tips for Students:
- Be alert to traffic. Check both ways for cars before stepping off the
bus.
- Make eye contact with the bus driver, and wait for the bus driver's
signal before crossing the street.
- Walk in front of the bus; never walk behind the bus to cross the street.
- While waiting for the bus, stay in a safe place away from the street.
- Before leaving the sidewalk, look for the flashing red lights.
- Never go under the bus to retrieve something you've dropped.
School Bus Safety Tips for Parents:
- Have your child ride the school bus to and from school instead of driving
or
riding with teenage passengers.
- Never attempt to go around or pass a school bus when the stop arm is down.
- The stop arm, which consists of a stop sign and red flashing lights,
requires
drivers in all states to stop.
- Review the above safety rules with your child regularly.
