Most days at Hemlock Elementary School,
the dress code is pretty well adhered to but on
Friday, October 30th, it was set aside in favor of a much different dress code:
that of ghouls, princesses, super heroes and more than a couple Michael Jacksons.
The school held a special costume parade to help kick-off Halloween weekend.
Students carried their chairs out to the blacktop and arranged them in a
gigantic circle to outline the parade route. Each grade level took a lap
to show off their inspired costumes to fellow students, as well as the many
parents who came to cheer them on. Teachers got in on the fun, too,
wearing some fun and crazy costumes.
According to Principal Jerry Mullins, who dressed up as a beekeeper, the costume parade was a special reward
for the students' hard work in raising Hemlock's score on the API. "Since coming to Hemlock parents, students and
even teachers have been asking for days like this and I told them we must remain
focused on academics but when, not if, we surpass the 800 mark we would be able
to have some fun days like this," he said. "We did it and I wanted to stay true to my
word! I'm glad we could have this fun day and look forward to many more in the
future!"
