First Grade Student Honored for Heroism

When six-year old Jeff Agnew’s mother passed out in the car after picking him up
from Binks Elementary School, he was scared. But he knew what to do. Jeff called
911 for help.
At the FUSD Board of Education meeting on May 19, 2010, School Police Chief Bob
Ratcliffe and Fire Captain Ernie Garcia presented Jeff with certificates for his
heroic act. Said Chief Bob, “He called 911 and he got emergency services out to
help his mom. He saved his mother’s life.”
Happily, Jeff’s mother, Carla Agnew, fully recovered from her ordeal. She and
husband, Jeff, stood proudly by their son’s side as he was honored for his
courage.
Said Fire Captain Ernie Garcia of Medic Engine 78, “County Fire runs
approximately 20,000 calls within the city. Very few times have I had the
pleasure of meeting a young man with such a cool head. We got dispatched to a
medical aid situation and most of the time, we get there and it is chaos. The
dispatcher took the call and this little six year old gentleman was talking to her,
telling her what was wrong. We get there and he is calm. We have to ask
questions so we can get an idea – and he is calm, cool, collected.“
“This is a good reminder for parents to tell their children about 911 and how to
use it to summon emergency help,” said Chief Bob.
