The students at Primrose Elementary School are helping
in the fight against
childhood cancer, while improving their math skills. How are they
accomplishing this amazing feat? The students have joined forces with
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to participate in Math-A-Thon, a
program designed to strengthen basic math skills while providing the
students with the opportunity to build character and self-esteem through
helping others.
Students ask their parents, relatives, friends and neighbors for pledges,
either in an amount-per-problem or a one-time donation. Then, they go to work
using the Math-A-Thon FunBooks - adding, subtracting, multiplying, and
dividing - honing their math skills and helping fight childhood cancer in
the process. The Math-A-Thon FunBooks were designed by Scholastic and
feature a new curriculum of math activities in fun comic-book format that
meet national standards in education and challenge students with
age-appropriate math problems.
After they’ve completed solved all their math problems, the students go back
and collect the pledges. Top Math-A-Thon fundraisers will also win fun
prizes.
“We are very proud of our students for working so hard on the Math-A-Thon,”
said Tracy Hofmann, a fifth grade teacher at Primrose. “With their help, St.
Jude Hospital will be able to create new treatments that may one day lead to
a cure for many forms of cancer.“
