New Secondary Principals Announced
At the June 23, 2010, Board Meeting, the Fontana
Unified School District’s Board of Education named two FUSD Assistant Principals
as its newest secondary Principals. Beginning July 1, Delia Fant, an Assistant
Principal at Summit High School, will be taking the reins from Mike Andrus, who
retired as the school’s Principal at the end of the school year. Doug Bergquist,
Assistant Principal of Southridge Middle School, will be the new Principal of
Almeria Middle School, taking over for Greg Fromm who will be
Principal-on-Assignment at the Fontana Alternative Learning Center.
Delia
Fant was born in Chihuahua, Mexico. "Both of my parents
were born in the United States," said Mrs. Fant, "so, I am a natural
U.S. citizen even though I was born outside of the country." The
family moved to Cucamonga when she was three and she has lived most of
her life in the Upland area. Surprisingly, her early ambitions
were not to go into education but they do explain why her hair always
looks so fabulous. "From the time I was a child, I
wanted to become a hair stylist, to the dismay of my junior high school
English teacher, Mr. Kawasaki," said Mrs. Fant. "He felt I should
attend college and set my career goals higher. He told me that I had
great potential and that being bilingual would open many doors for me.
I didn’t listen. I earned a full scholarship to Ontario Beauty
College upon graduating from Upland High School and became a hair
stylist. The majority of my clients remained loyal to me for the
twenty-two years that I worked. Coincidently, one of them was Mrs.
Kawasaki, the widow of my English teacher, who had passed away before I
graduated from high school. I wish he would have lived long enough
to know that he was right." She returned to school and
earned her B.A. in Spanish from Cal State University, San Bernardino and
her M.A. in Spanish Literature and Linguistics from Cal State
University, Fullerton. Mrs. Fant has been with the Fontana Unified
School District for nineteen years. She taught Spanish at A.B.
Miller High School for nine years and served as an Assistant Principal
at Sequoia Middle School for eight years and at Summit High School for
the last two. "I am very excited to serve FUSD and Summit High
staff as their principal," said Mrs. Fant. "I hope to motivate all
Summit staff to work to their fullest potential through my example of
dedication, determination, and a strong work ethic. My leadership will
focus on a clear vision, a structured plan, and perseverance to reach
our action plan goals." |

Doug
Bergquist
was born in South Dakota but grew-up in Rawlins, Wyoming when his
family moved there when he was very young. He said that he knew from an early
age that the wanted to go into education. “I had a math teacher who really
believed in me and encouraged me to study math,” said Mr. Bergquist. He did his
undergrad work at the University of Wyoming, where he majored in math education
with a minor in biology. “I started my education career in Fontana and I plan to
finish it here,” he said. In fact, Mr. Bergquist’s career path has come full
circle. He actually started teaching math and science at Almeria Middle School
eighteen years ago. He transferred to the District Office to work as a
Teacher-on-Assignment in Staff Development and then to Southridge Middle School
where he has been an Assistant Principal for the past nine years. “I am honored
to be the new Principal of Almeria Middle School,” said Mr. Bergquist. “Almeria
holds a special place in my heart and I can’t wait to begin the new school
year.” |
“The role of principal is a critical instructional leadership position,” said
Oscar Duenas, Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services. “On a daily
basis, principals interact with teachers, students, parents, support staff,
community volunteers and many others and serve as the link between the district
administration and the school community. I feel confident that Mrs. Fant and Mr.
Bergquist will bring the knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm needed to excel
in their new positions.”
