Ho, Ho, Ho! Fontana Santas are Coming to Town
The
Fontana Unified School District, Fontana School Police, City of Fontana,
and Fontana Police Department are joining forces with the community to bring
joy to hundreds of Fontana children as they kick-off the 12th Annual Fontana Santas
toy drive and they are accepting donations of new, unwrapped gifts for all
ages - babies to teenagers.
The program provides deserving low-income children
with an opportunity to celebrate Christmas with their
families. Fontana Santas believe that every child should be provided for during the
Holidays and this event assists families with multiple children.
Fontana Santas is a city-wide toy drive that
began twelve years ago when FUSD School Police Officer Cindy Evaro heard about a little boy in the community who
ran away from home the day after Christmas because he didn't get any presents.
The next Christmas, Cindy and FUSD Community Liaison Lydia Wibert started a
Christmas toy drive for the needy children in Fontana and named it Fontana Santas. Since that time the Fontana Santas
program has "snowballed" and for the past six years has included the FUSD School Police Services, Fontana
Police Department, Fontana Police Officers Association, local churches, local
service organizations and private citizens who all make generous
contributions. Last Christmas, they collected toys and
delivered them to approximately 500 families.
All donations are distributed
by police officers, accompanied by other City officials, to the residences of
these deserving families. Gifts are distributed based on appropriate
ages for each household. Children either living in Fontana or attending
a Fontana Unified School District School are eligible for this program.
If you would like to make a contribution to the
Fontana Santas Program, donations will be accepted at all of the Fontana
School Sites, the Fontana School Police Services office, and the Fontana
Police Department until December 11 (late donations can be dropped off
directly to Fontana School Police Services office). Fontana Santas will be delivering the toys on Saturday,
December
19 - volunteers are still needed to help deliver gifts. This Christmas
could be your chance to be a Fontana Santa!
