FUSD Prepares for the Great Southern California ShakeOut
|
At 10:15 am on October 15, 2009, the Fontana Unified
School District will join the City of Fontana and millions of Southern
Californians in the ShakeOut Drill, the largest earthquake preparedness activity
in U.S. history. The Great Southern California ShakeOut includes a
ShakeOut Drill and other events organized to inspire southern Californians to
get ready for big earthquakes, and to prevent disasters from becoming
catastrophes.
Between now and October 15, our district will be
taking steps to make sure we are prepared for the drill and beyond. We are
encouraging our schools to make sure that students and staff are prepared in the
event of a big earthquake and we also want to make sure you are prepared at
home, too.
Remember, we're all in this together! The
more you do to prepare now, before a big earthquake, the better all our lives
will be after. Here are just a few things individuals and families can do
to participate in the ShakeOut and to prepare for big earthquakes.
|
- Between now and October 15: Consider what may happen in a big
earthquake and plan what you will do now to prepare, so that when it happens
you will be able to recover quickly. Talk to other people about what
they have done, and encourage them to join you in getting more prepared.
- October 15, at 10:15 am:
| 1. |
Drop, Cover, and Hold On: Drop to the ground, take
Cover under a table or desk, and Hold On to it as if a magnitude 7.8
earthquake were happening (stay down for at least 60 seconds).
Practice now so you will immediately protect yourself during earthquakes!
(Click here to find out what to do if you are in bed, outside, driving, in a
tall building, and other situations.) |
| 2. |
While still under the table, or wherever you are, look
around and imagine what would happen in a big earthquake, when shaking may
last for 1-2 minutes! What would fall on you or others? What
would be damaged? What would life be like after? What will you
do before the actual earthquake happens to reduce losses and quickly
recover? |
| 3. |
Finally, you can practice what you will do after the shaking
stops. |
- After the ShakeOut Event: Complete your disaster plan or supply kits, or
attend a local preparedness event.
One of the most crucial preparedness steps is to maintain a stash of emergency
supplies – food, water, first aid supplies, clothing and bedding, tools and
emergency supplies and special items for medical conditions. If your
child is on medication, you should make sure that the school has at least a
three-day supply in the event of a big earthquake. Residents should
maintain food and water supplies for a minimum of 72 hours, but it’s best to
prepare for two weeks.
