Dear Fontana Community,
For the past several years K-12 education has had significant reductions in
revenue. On Monday, January 10, 2011, Governor Brown presented his budget
for 2011-12. He has stated there would be no mid-year cuts to K-12
education. Also, his budget for 2011-12 contains a minimal reduction to
K-12 education. In order for the Governor's budget to be successful, the
voters of California will need to vote on extending the tax increases imposed by
the legislatures of California back in 2009. The extension of the tax
increase would be for five years. The taxes include the .5% increase in
vehicle registration, 1% increase in sales tax, and an increase to the personal
income tax.
Currently, the Fontana Unified School District had a reduction in its 2010-11
revenue by approximately $45 million. If the Governor is unsuccessful in
extending the tax increases, we would be facing additional reductions in our
revenue. The estimated increase in State revenue of $2 billion through tax
increases equates to approximately $13 million for the Fontana Unified School
District. Without the extension of the taxes, the Fontana Unified School
District would need to make an additional $13 million in cuts.
Sincerely,
Cali L. Olsen-Binks
Superintendent
