Fitness Grants Awarded to Binks Elementary and Truman Middle Schools

Students at Kathy Binks Elementary and Truman Middle Schools are among the fittest in San Bernardino County’s Second District according to the Governor’s office.

San Bernardino County Second District Supervisor Paul Biane announced that Binks and Truman were among the five Second District schools that will receive local grant awards based on their participation in the 2010 Governor’s Challenge.  “It’s critical for our children to start exercising regularly now because it means they’ll be more likely to continue that good habit as adults,” said Supervisor Biane.

Each of the five schools will receive a grant based on their school’s participation in the Governor’s Challenge.  Students participated by exercising 30 to 60 minutes three times a week for a month.  Children logged their fitness activities into the Governor’s Challenge website.  More than a million students across the state participated in this year’s competition.

The five Second District winning schools are:  Grapeland Elementary School (100% participation - will receive %5,000); Etiwanda Intermediate School (70.7% - will receive $3,000); Rancho Cucamonga High School (31.1% - will receive $2,000); Binks (27.8%) and Truman (26%) will each receive $1,000. The schools can use the grant to purchase physical education equipment or to support physical education program.

"We are absolutely thrilled to be recognized for our participation in the Governor's Challenge," said Joanne Thoring, Principal of Binks Elementary School.  “We look forward to spending our award on new equipment to keep the students energetic and active every day!”

According to the governor's office, national research indicates that less than 50 percent of 9- to 11-year-olds participate in the recommended 60 minutes of exercise a day. By encouraging children and teens to exercise, the Governor's Challenge hopes participants will become healthier both mentally and physically. The statewide winners of the Governor’s Challenge are scheduled to be release in September.

The top three schools will receive new fitness centers, and top school from each of the 11 regions will receive $6,000 from the Governor’s Challenge.
