On Friday, September 24, 2010, Mango Elementary School held a special
book-signing event to celebrate the launch of their new children’s book,
“Hello, Mango!”
Excitement filled the air as students lined-up
to have the authors, Principal Sara Najarro and
Teacher Patty Yeary, sign their personal copies.
The hardback book, starring school mascot Mango the
Mountain Lion, captures the culture of Mango Elementary School and the school
community’s focus on inspiring and preparing elementary schools to attend
college – NO Excuses!
In "Hello, Mango!",
Mango the Mountain Lion proudly wears his No Excuses University T-shirt as he
enjoys a full day of activities with his friends. He recites the Mango College
Bound Pledge, reviews Mango Elementary’s College Bound Characteristics
(Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship) and
attends the Mango Elementary Pep Rally where young students celebrate and cheer
for their favorite colleges. At the end of his busy day at this California
Distinguished School, the lively mascot also reflects on many fun annual events
and activities including Red Ribbon Week, Jump for Heart, Read Your Way To
College and other exciting activities that make Mango Elementary School a unique
school for students, teachers, administrators and parent volunteers.
Mrs. Najarro and Mrs. Yeary worked
closely alongside nationally recognized children’s publisher, Mascot Books, to create the book. Mango
Elementary's one-of-a-kind, hardcover book promotes reading, reinforces their No
Excuses University message, builds school spirit and serves as a fundraiser for
the school.
“We couldn’t wait to tell our NEU at Mango story so that the entire school
community of staff members and families could celebrate our journey,” said Mrs. Najarro. “We are a No Excuses University school which means that we believe and
promote college readiness beginning in pre-school for all of our students.
‘Hello, Mango!’ helps us remember that we must do whatever it takes every day to
prepare our students to go to college and have fun at the same time.” Mrs. Najarro added, “We love our book that captures the essence of our Distinguished
school!”
“Hello, Mango!” is sold exclusively through Mango Elementary School for $10 a
copy and all proceeds go toward the school.
