March 30, 2011, State Superintendent of Public Instruction
Tom Torlakson announced that Fontana's
Oleander Elementary School has been named as a 2010-11 Title I Academic
Achievement Award Recipient.
"Oleander Elementary School is truly deserving of
this honor," said Cali Olsen-Binks, Superintendent of Fontana Unified School
District. "Back in
1998, the first year the state began calculating the Academic Performance Index
(API), Oleander had an API of 403, which was the lowest in the district.
Since then they have raised their API by 415 points to 818 - the second highest
in the district. They've really come along way."
Oleander is one of only fourteen schools in San
Bernardino County being recognized for this honor this year. "We are
proud of the achievements of these outstanding schools and their communities who
support them," County Superintendent Gary
Thomas said. "These distinctions show the high level of academic work
by the students working with staff, teachers, administrators and district
leadership for this statewide recognition." The fourteen county schools
