Oleander Elementary Named as 2010-11 Academic Achievement Award Recipient

On March 30, 2011, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson announced that Fontana's Oleander Elementary School has been named as a 2010-11 Title I Academic Achievement Award Recipient.

"Oleander Elementary School is truly deserving of this honor," said Cali Olsen-Binks, Superintendent of Fontana Unified School District.  "Back in 1998, the first year the state began calculating the Academic Performance Index (API), Oleander had an API of 403, which was the lowest in the district.  Since then they have raised their API by 415 points to 818 - the second highest in the district.  They've really come along way."

Oleander is one of only fourteen schools in San Bernardino County being recognized for this honor this year.  "We are proud of the achievements of these outstanding schools and their communities who support them," County Superintendent Gary Thomas said.  "These distinctions show the high level of academic work by the students working with staff, teachers, administrators and district leadership for this statewide recognition."  The fourteen county schools and their districts are:

  • Oleander Elementary School - Fontana Unified School District
  • Sycamore Rocks Elementary School - Apple Valley Unified School District
  • Hinkley Elementary/Middle and Skyline North Elementary - Barstow Unified School District
  • Cypress School of the Arts - Hesperia Unified School District
  • Buena Vista Arts and Elderberry Elementary School - Ontario-Montclair Elementary School
  • Franklin Elementary and Judson and Brown Elementary School - Redlands Unified School District
  • Park Avenue Elementary and Richardson Prep - San Bernardino City Unified School District
  • Sixth Street Prep and Village Elementary School - Victor Elementary School District
  • University Prep - Victor Valley Union High School District

Statewide, there were 209 schools who received  the recognition out of nearly 6,000 Title I schools in California.  Title I is one of the programs under the federal No Child Left Behind Act designed to improve the academic achievement of disadvantaged students.
