Thirty-eight
San Bernardino County projects were crowned champions at the 22nd annual History
Day competition on Saturday, March 19 at Summit High School. Of the
thirty-eight winning projects, Upland
Unified had the most county group and individual champions with 21, followed by
Fontana Unified School District with a total of 7 county champions (3 individual
and 4 group).
The individual and group champions qualify for advancement to the California History Day
competition in San Diego on April 28.
The county History Day event had as its theme, "Debate and Diplomacy in
History: Successes, Failures and Consequences." There were three divisions with both individual and
group competitions: Elementary (Grades 4-5), Junior (Grades 6-8) and
Senior (Grades 9-12). All totaled, 150 students, representing six school
districts and a private school, competed.
History Day gives students a chance to compete in a variety of categories on a
historical theme. The Elementary Division only has one category of
competition, posters; the Junior and Senior divisions compete in exhibit,
documentary, performance, Website and research paper categories.
